A fiberglass deck is not an easy surface to paint. The fiberglass surfaces do not accept most forms of paint. Therefore, you need to use special epoxy paints. Painting should also be done outside because it involves usage of highly toxic chemicals. Properly applied paint lasts up to 10 years.

Process of Painting a Fiberglass Deck

1. Tape all the corners and edges of the deck that will not be painted with a masking tape. Then, remove all other things from the deck, or cover them with plastic sheeting.

2. Wash the entire deck surface with warm water and liquid soap. Clean off any grease, wax or other tough stains with acetone when the surface is dried.

3. Sand down all surfaces of the deck that you are going to paint with an orbital sander and 80-grit sandpaper.

4. Following the instructions mix the two-part epoxy primer precisely, and then apply it to the fiberglass surface using a roller brush.

5. After the primer is dried, sand the surface again using 220-grit sandpaper.

6. Using a fresh roller blade paint the deck surface with marine epoxy. Apply three to four coats of the paint.

7. Carefully, remove the tape from the edges and corners immediately after painting, and wait for the paint to dry before removing the sheeting.

8. When the paint is dried wax the surface, then apply an automotive paste in circular motions. Finally, when the paste is dried, buff the surface with an orbital buffer.
